Blending, Clipping, Acronim

Discussion and Examples

Hopefully you have not forgotten these terminologies. Your module two on vocabulary that you studied in the first semester says that: "Blending is the fusion of two words into one, usually the first part one word with the last part of the other so that the resultant blend consists of both original meanings, e.g.: motel, brunch, fridge, smog".

You still remember the meanings of these blendings, do you? If you don't, study again your vocabulary lessons, will you? Clipping is a process in which a word ia formed by shortening a longer word, e.g.: zoo dorm, mag, pub, ads. You also have many clippings in Indonesian. Acronym is the result of forming a word from the first letter or letters of each word in a phrase, e.g. NASA, VIP, YMCA, AIDS. These systems of word formation are not only found in English but also in Indonesian. Look at the examples below:

Satpam, Hansip, Kanwil, Kades, Jatim, Perek.

Nur (for Nurhadi), kek (for kakek), pak (for Bapak).

KK, LSD, ABRI. AND, PBB, POMG, RSU.

It is sometime difficult, if not impossible, to find the lexical equivalent of either English blending, clipping and acronym in Indonesian or Indonesian blending, clipping and acronym in English. What is the Indonesian word for 'motel’ or 'brunch'? And what is the English word for 'hansip' or 'Kanwil'? The easiest way to translate those words is to explain the meaning of their components, e.g.;

motel = motor + hotel = hotel untuk para pelancong yang berkendaraan mobil

brunch = breakfast + lunch = makan pagi dan siang sekaligus

hansip = pertahanan + sipil = civil defence

Kanwil = Kantor + wilayah = Regional Office

Thus in this case there is no word for word translation. Or, if the new word has become very popular, you don't even have to translate it, just write as it is. For examples you have words such as NASA, UNICEF, WHO, and AIDS which you don't have to translate because; they are quite popular. It is funny that we have etc in Indonesian which is identical with the English etc. We also have PM which can be interpreted as Perdana Perdana Menteri or Prime Minister. But these are only few coincidences.

In translating English blendings, clippings or acronyms into Indonesian you should first of all try to find the original word or words. Sometimes an acronym or a clipping has more than one meaning, thus the context will help you identify the intended one. Look at these examples below:

1. We arrived here at 7 p.m. (post maridem = sore)

2. The p.m. will be done as (post mortem = pemeriksaan mayat)

soon as the doctor arrives.

3. The British P.M. is a really tough (Prime Minister = Perdana Menteri)

woman.

4. The new P.M. has been in the (Provost Marshal = opsir tentara yang

army for more than ten years. bertugas menjaga keamanan)

5. A sub is a warship able to operate (Submarine = kapal selam)

under the surface of the sea.

6. Chris is a sub teacher for Mrs. White (Substitute = pengganti)

while she is on official leave.

7. The monument was erected by public (subscription = sumbangan)

sub.

In translating English acronyms or blendings into Indonesian sometimes you have to make lexical adjustments. Look at the examples below:

U.F.O. = Unidentified Flying Object

1 2 3

tak dikenal terbang benda

1 2 3

= Benda terbang tak dikenal = Piring terbang

Subway = sub railway

1 2

di bawah jalan kereta api

1 2

= Jalan kereta api di bawah = kereta api di bawah tanah

The Concept of Meaning

As you have notice in the process of translation, meaning plays an important role. There are different kinds of meaning in language. The meaning relate to the language function as a means of communication. It is closely influenced by the grammars, context, situation and society culture to where the meaning occurs. There are the different kinds of meanings categorized.

A. Lexical Meaning

Meaning as defined in the dictionary is called lexical meaning. Usually it occurs when the word is used in isolation.

Example : English Indonesian

Snobbish Sombong

Rooster Ayam Jago

Oscillate Terombang-ambing

B. Grammatical Meaning

Meaning as defined by word formation (morphology) or word arrangement in phrase or sentence (syntax).

Example : English Indonesia

1. Pencil case Case for putting the pencil

Case pencil A kind of pencil as fit to be put a pencil case

(the type and dimension)

2. Car factory factory car write the Indonesian

3. She Calculation her saving. (every day)

She calculated her saving. (last night)

She has calculated her saving. (since morning)

She is calculating her saving (now)

4. The hunter killed the bear

The bear killed the hunter

Example 1 and 2 show that English modifies come before the main nouns or use MD rules. On the other side, Indonesia has DM rules. The different formation or order determines the meaning.

Example 3 proves the influence of English tense that indicates the time when the activity happens.

Example 4 brings a very far different message from the syntax they use.

C. Textual Meaning

Meaning of word directed to its relation to other words in the sentence.

Example : 1. Hand me your papers (menyerahkan)

2. Just give me a hand (membantu)

3. All hands aboard (anak buah kapal)

4. They are always ready at hand (siap)

Or

1.Masalah itu segera ditangani oleh yang berwajib.

2.Ternyata orang bertato itu merupakan kaki tangan gerombolan perampok

3.Anak muda itu sekarang menjadi tangan kanan pimpinan perusahaan

D. Situational Meaning

Meaning or a word or phrase or sentence that exists in situation or context when it used.

Example : (The following example are taken from book entitle Terjemahan: Pengantar teori dan praktek, written by Zuchridin Suryawinata).

  1. The phrase “Good Morning” is usually used as a greeting when someone meets friends in the morning. But in different situation that greeting changes the meaning. Learn the new situation below.

“A Staff, who always comes late and is lazy, is questioning by his manager but he is arguing and sure with his own reasons. This makes the manager irritates. At last he shouts : “That is enough. Good morning!

Those words are absolutely not a greeting, but it is a command for him to go out of the room as quickly as possible. The result of the translation in Indonesia is “Cukup Keluar”.

  1. Find the proper meaning for the word “fire”

a. Do you have a fire for him?

b. Fire! The house is in a big fire

c. Concentrate to the object, and fire!

E. Socio – Cultural Meaning

It is the meaning closely linked to the values of society and culture of the language. The phrase, sentence or utterances of the language is specific and unchangeable for its function. The formulas are set to maintain verbal social contacts. Since the equivalence is often found in target language or intranslatable, in your translation you should make textual adjustment for those.

Example : Thinks how do you translate them

- How do you do?

- It’s nice of you to meet me.

- What’s wrong with you?

- Excuse me, I want to wash my hand.

- So long!

Read the following example to get clearer concept of the social cultural meaning. This explanation is given by Zuchridin Surtawinata in this book.

Tetapi secara konstektual terjemahan yang paling dekat adalah “How was your trip to ….” dan jawabnya adalah “It was marvelous”, dan bukan “Where’s your gift ….” dan jawabnya bukan pula “(my gift) is tiredness”.

a. Behaviorisme

Hubungan langsung

S ------------------------------------------ R

Stimulus yang dapat dilihat

Respons yang dapat dilihat

(Sumber: Charles Galloway, 1976. Psychology for learning and teaching. New York; McGraw-Hill Book Co. h. 81)

Beberapa macam teori behaviorisme yang terkenal adalah :

1) Kondisioning klasik (Pavlov) .

Teori ini didasarkan atas reaksi sistem tak terkontrol di dalam diri seorang dan reaksi emosional yang dikontrol oleh sistem urat syaraf otonom serta gerak refleks setelah menerima stimulus dari luar.

Respons tidak terkontrol

Stimulus tidak terkontrol

(US) (US)

US --------------------------------- UR

US --------------------------------- UR CR

US --------------------------------- UR CR

US --------------------------------- CR

CS --------------------------------- CR

a) hasil-hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ketrampilan-ketrampilan kognitif tingkat tinggi dapat dicapai oleh anak-anak yang belum mencapai umur yang sesuai dengan jenjang-jenjang di teori Piaget;

Gage & Berliner (1979) menyimpulkan beberapa prinsip Bruner, yaitu:

a) makin tinggi tingkat perkembangan intelektual, makin meningkat pula ketidak tergantungan individu terhadap stimulus yang diberikan;

b) pertumbuhan seseorang tergantung pada perkembangan kemampuan internal untuk menyimpan dan memproses informasi. Data yang diterima orang dari luar perlu diolah secara mental.

c) perkembangan intelektual meliputi peningkatan kemampuan untuk mengutarakan pendapat dan gagasan melalui simbol;

d) untuk mengembangkan kognitif seseorang diperlukan interaksi antara pengajar dan yang diajar;

e) perkembangan kognitif meningkatkan kemampuan seseorang untuk memikirkan beberapa alternatif secara serempak, memberikan perhatian kepada beberapa stimuli dan situasi sekaligus, serta melakukan kegiatan-kegiatan.
